A proposed enhancement is now available in 12977. Both review and actual =
testing would be most helpful.

Another issue: Your autoconf refactoring changes (12876..12878 as merged =
onto 1.8.x) are certainly a good thing, but backporting them to 1.6 is =
not quite trivial. On the other hand, it's probably now or never. Any =
help would be much appreciated.
