Update to my previous posting.
After some investigation i found out, that in my case the sample entry

# This file must change to specify a cell.
# The "511.01.01.01" represents an IP address.
511.01.01.01   #DBServerMachineName1
511.02.02.02   #DBServerMachineName2
511.03.03.03   #DBServerMachineName3

in the "afsdcell.ini" located in C:\Winnt\ caused the error message:

** Can't determine local cell name!
Unable to authenticate to AFS because password was incorrect.

Without this entry the authentication problem does not show up again.
