[OpenAFS] Unable to stop AFS

Hello,

we keep having problems with the OpenAFS client
(both version 1.1.1 and now 1.2.1) on RedHat Linux 
7.1 (kernel 2.4.3-12) compiled with gcc 2.96.

The problem is that the afs script is never able to
shut down AFS during reboot. It complains about
not being able to unmount /afs and /usr/vice/cache.
When the machine ultimately shuts down and reboots,
the AFS network access gets sometimes very (seconds) 
slow. There are no errors logged. The only remedy I was
able to come up with is to reboot in a single user mode,
delete all files in the cache (rm -rf /usr/vice/cache/*) and
reboot. Then everything works till the machine has to be
rebooted again. Manually running "/etc/rc.d/init/afs stop"
also never works, even when only root is logged on the 
machine (although the xdm or kdm is located in afs).

The location and order of the KNNafs scripts is the same as for
nfs (K20afs) and the same as it was with Transarc AFS 3.6 but
we do not have this problem with Transarc AFS (on RedHat 6.2).
RedHat 6.2+Transarc AFS 3.6 machines shut down and reboot 
gracefully and I never had to delete the cashe manually on them.

I would very much appreciate any help on this as
it affects us quite badly.
