Default Red Hat is sufficiently broken in this regard (and others...) that 
before we ditched it entirely, we were rearranging startup scripts 
including PCMCIA.

Unfortunately, the "Windows" of the Linux world is pretty much going to 
force AFS startup to be broken/wrong, I suspect, since saying "it's broken" 
doesn't help.  :(
