[OpenAFS] AFS Backups

Now, while starting to dive into the restore process, the guide states the volumes to be restored will be the same as the ones listed in a 'volset'. My question is, can a read-write volume be created from a .backup volume or should I back up read write volumes as well as .backup volumes? (which is kind of redundant, no?)
