[OpenAFS] the AFS Client service is stopping... (never)

I have installed a new version of the AFS client (1.2.8 a) on my W2K machine.

Yet, it's not working poperly and telling me:
"The AFS Client is not configured properly, or the AFS Client service is not running.
 Use the Advanced tab to start the AFS Client service."
When I do this, both "Start Service" and "Stop Service" buttons are not active.
I press "Configure AFS Client"
Then I get the AFS Client configuration panel with a popup box
"AFS Client Service"
"Please wait; the AFS Client service is stopping..."

Yet, this never disappears. Although, I can do the configuration on the "AFS Client Configuration" panel, this has no effect.  That popup window is still there. Reboot does not yield a proper startup (I think I have entered the correct configuration, I have been using the windows client for years now).
