[OpenAFS] can't access afs directories

I've installed afs 3 separate ways, each entirely different and all end up
with the same results, I can't access any afs directories. The installation
will seem to have gone well. The cache initializes, I start afs and klog
and successfully get a token for the appropriate afs cell. When I try to cd
to a directory in that cell it just hangs. I'm running this on RedHat 9.0
over the MTS client into IBM. Any ideas on how I approach this? Thanks
