We mostly use ramdisks as cache in Linux 2.4 and AIX 5.2. Did you do
correctly a mkfs for ext2?
We have this in our /etc/init.d/afs:
/sbin/mkfs /dev/ram1 16384 >/dev/null 2>&1
mount /dev/ram1 /usr/vice/cache
