Yeah, trouble started when I started using the newer clients.

>You really seem to be having a hard time. I can't even see your cell
>because of your firewall

well, it is not my firewall, it the networking dept that manages that one. Been
down there this morning (half hour ago) and convinced them they really have to
open those ports up. (I actually sat next to a guy looking him get started on
it)

>but when I try to access it via a UNC reference, the freelance code
>automatically
>generates the mount point

ok. just checking, freelance mode needs to be on ..correct ? and that is done
in the registry like you told me.
I seem to get mountpoints created.. but things seem to be wrong with them ?

btw: the cell names are csc.depauw.edu and afs-2.csc.depauw.edu The hosts they
are served from are helios.csc.depauw.edu and neptune.csc.depauw.edu
respectively. (I don't need to put the cell names in DNS, do I ?)

ok, this is what I see :

C:\>dir \\afs\all
Volume in drive \\afs\all is AFS
 Volume Serial Number is 0000-04D2

 Directory of \\afs\all

07/09/2001 01:24 PM <DIR> .
07/09/2001 01:24 PM <DIR> ..
07/09/2001 01:24 PM <DIR> afs-2.csc.depauw
07/09/2001 01:24 PM <DIR> csc.depauw.edu
07/09/2001 01:24 PM <DIR> afs-2-cowboy
07/09/2001 01:24 PM <DIR> csc-cowboy
               0 File(s) 4,238 bytes
               6 Dir(s) 1,099,511,626,752 bytes free

afs-2.csc.depauw.edu is the name of the new cell I built
csc.depauw.edu is the name of the "old" cell
afs-2-cowboy is mountpoint for /afs/afs-2.csc.depauw.edu/home/cowboy served
from neptune.csc.depauw.edu.
csc-cowboy is mountpoint for /afs/csc.depauw.edu/home/cowboy served from
helios.csc.depauw.edu.
I created the afs-2-cowboy and csc-cowboy mointpoints with fs mkmount.

Now when I browse (with MS explorer) then I can browse through :
J:\afs-2-cowboy same thing with dir j:\afs-2-cowboy in a cmd window :

C:\>dir j:\afs-2-cowboy
Volume in drive J is AFS
 Volume Serial Number is 0000-04D2

 Directory of j:\afs-2-cowboy

07/23/2004 11:10 AM <DIR> .
07/23/2004 11:10 AM <DIR> ..
07/24/2004 11:55 AM 29 test.txt
07/22/2004 08:28 AM <DIR> Desktop
               1 File(s) 6,173 bytes
               3 Dir(s) 1,099,511,626,752 bytes free

BUT when I do :

C:\>dir \\afs\afs-2-cowboy
The system cannot find the file specified.

but it should give me the same listing.
(because when I do the same things with csc-cowboy it all seems to work)

>[C:\Program Files\OpenAFS\Client]\\afs\csc.depauw.edu\
>4NT: (Sys) The system cannot find the path specified.
> "\\afs\csc.depauw.edu*
>
>[C:\Program Files\OpenAFS\Client]\\afs\all\
>
>[\\afs\all]dir
>
> Directory of \\afs\all\*

I mentioned my \\afs\all above here...

>
>[\\afs\all]\\afs\afs-2.csc.depauw.edu\
>4NT: (Sys) The system cannot find the path specified.
> "\\afs\afs-2.csc.depauw.edu*
>
>[\\afs\all]dir
>

I'm on XP, I can't seem to cd to \\afs\all

%<

> 0 bytes in 0 files and 15 dirs
>1,099,511,626,752 bytes free

>
>With cmd.exe you need to use "NET USE \\AFS\csc.depauw.edu
>

right, I did that. and that seems to work,

C:\>NET USE \\AFS\afs-2-cowboy
Local name
Remote name \\afs\AFS-2-COWBOY
Resource type Disk
Status OK
# Opens 0
# Connections 3
The command completed successfully.

but :
C:\>dir \\afs\afs-2-cowboy
The system cannot find the file specified.

>Anyway, back to the testing of the new release.

I think I am going home, sit on the porch with a beer a knife and a piece of
wood and whittle me a magic wand.

I know you have important stuff to do. It's just that apparently something
"weird" is going on. I hope the network guys finally opened up those ports.

thanks,

Ron
