Without modifying the RPMs, you mean? You could defer their installation
until the machine has been rebooted into its final kernel. Copy the RPMs
to /var/tmp on the target system and add an rcS script that installs
them and cleans up afterwards (unlinking itself and the RPMs in
/var/tmp). Hopefully the OpenAFS client will then be able to start
without an intervening reboot, but if not, you can always trigger a
second reboot from the rcS script.
