[OpenAFS] to write to the dot directory or not to write to the dot directory?

Yes.

If a write would automatically go to the rw volume even if you opened
a file in the rw volume, after the first write your editor would not
read different things from whatit wrote, and how confusing would that
be?

Vos release is manual as well.
