The file can of course be totally different on the RO volume and that would=
 be wired.

No.

Yes.

If a write would automatically go to the rw volume even if you opened
a file in the rw volume, after the first write your editor would not
read different things from whatit wrote, and how confusing would that
be?

Vos release is manual as well.
