So, when I went to reproduce this, I got a little confused, since the
volume appears to restore fine in this situation, and the volume is
useable just fine afterwards.

Are the log messages you mentioned the only problem here? That is, there
were no problems in restoring the volume or accessing the volume
afterwards?
