Completely mysteriously to everyone who worked on the code, this problem
improved substantially for many of us in around the 1.2.9 release, IIRC
the release number correctly.  No one is sure why, because apparently this
wasn't actually fixed, but we saw the problem nearly disappear when we
upgraded.
