Since you may loose some vendor support, if you use a "custom patched
kernel"?

It's still a major effort if security fixes come out and you simply
cannot say "rpm -Uvh" but need to get source-RPMs, add your patches,
etc. The kernel is a moving target and you really want the kernel
developers to track it.
