Thanks for the suggestion Simon. However, I think my kernel and kernel-mods
match -- unless I'm reading this wrong:

locate afs | grep ko
/lib/modules/2.6.9-78.0.1.EL/extra/openafs/openafs.ko

$ uname -a
Linux 2.6.9-78.0.13.ELsmp #1 SMP Wed Jan 7 17:45:52 EST 2009 x86_64 x86_64
x86_64 GNU/Linux

I thought since the kernel says its SMP that I might need

http://openafs.org/dl/openafs/1.4.8/rhel4/x86_64/kmod-openafs-smp-1.4.8-1.1.2.6.9_78.EL.x86_64.rpm

but attempts to install that fail with the error:

error: Failed dependencies:
 kernel-smp-x86_64 = 2.6.9-78.EL is needed by
kmod-openafs-smp-1.4.8-1.1.2.6.9_78.EL.x86_64
 Suggested resolutions:

So, I'm little lost. Enlighten me please.

You shouldn't need to do anything beyond this. There are a few things t=
hat you should check. Firstly, make sure that your running kernel matches t=
he model you have installed - you can check the running kernel with uname -=
r. It's possible that you've upgraded the kernel, but not yet reboo=
ted.

Secondly, run depmod -a, just to make sure that the module dependency infor=
mation is up to date.

I think you've probably got a mismatch between AFS module, and running =
kernel version, though.
<font color=3D"#888888">
